Introduction
ABS, PC and PC/ABS are distinct material choices, not a universal quality ranking. Compare the actual grade against the part's impact, heat, appearance and processing requirements. A PC/ABS blend has its own formulation and technical data; do not average PC and ABS properties to predict it.
PC, ABS and PC/ABS performance priorities
- ABS: assess surface finish, rigidity and impact together; general-purpose, high-heat and specialty grades are not interchangeable.
- PC: evaluate impact and heat performance, plus optical requirements where relevant. Transparent PC is not evidence that an ABS or PC/ABS grade will provide the same clarity.
- PC/ABS: compare the specific blend TDS for toughness, heat and flow. Vicat, HDT and continuous-use limits measure different things; a single heat value is not a universal service-temperature limit.
Application-based material choice
- PC protective parts
- ABS housings
- PC/ABS combined performance
Drying, molding and validation
- Use the selected supplier's drying instructions for each ABS, PC or PC/ABS grade. Do not transfer one resin's drying or melt-temperature settings to another.
- Review residence time, melt condition, venting and surface defects during the production trial. Adjust one process variable at a time when diagnosing a molding defect.
- Check test conditions before comparing MFR or MVR. MFR reports mass flow and MVR volume flow; their numbers are not directly interchangeable. Validate dimensions, assembly and finished-part tests on the intended tooling.
A practical selection framework
- Clear trade-offs
- Better cost-performance decisions
- Faster screening
